From childhood on Alfred was always drawing and taking photographs. His wish therefore was to study at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. However, the teacher decided that he would attend the Graphic School. He continued drawing, took painting lessons. The washed pen drawings he originally liked to do so much made way for paintings with colour, oil paint and canvas. He also continued taking pictures and regularly won prizes.

Over the years his style changed from surrealist to magic realist. Through his technique of glazing with oil, his paintings have a great clarity that they maintain over the years. He makes no effort to change the colours of his paintings true-to-nature. This helps him also to strengthen the typical atmosphere of his paintings.

Alfred works intensively and meticulously and always starts with sketching; he can be found almost daily in front of his easel. A favourite subject is French cows, but because he will and cannot limit himself to one theme, he also paints people, landscapes and still lifes.

Travelling through New Guinea, China, South Africa and southern European countries have led to a wide variety of themes for his paintings. He is socially involved and also in his paintings you can often find a statement. That is the power of an artist.

Apart from exhibitions in the Netherlands, he exhibits every two years in France where he lives and works half the year. There he is inspired by his natural environment (landscapes and animals). He regularly haunts the flea markets in search of pots, jugs and other items for his still lifes. In recent years he has also taken to sculpture because in France he has enough room for it.

His work can be found in private collections in the Netherlands, England, Scotland, France, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, India and the Turks and Caicos Islands. He also works on commission and these assignments can vary from painting a pet, if necessary with a dress, to a family portrait or Caribbean scenes. Together with the ideas of the client and his own way of working, they come by means of sketches to an agreement.

He is member of the Art Advisory committee of the Municipality Bloemendaal and member of Art-en-France.
